How to Choose the Right MCB Rating for Your Circuit

Choosing the wrong MCB rating is a genuine safety issue — too high and it won't protect the cable; too low and it'll nuisance-trip constantly. Getting it right comes down to two things: the amperage and the trip curve. Here's how to match both to your circuit.

Step 1: Match the Amperage to the Cable, Not Just the Load

The MCB's job is to protect the cable from overheating. So its rating must be below the cable's safe current-carrying capacity, while still comfortably above the normal load current. A common mistake is sizing purely to the appliance — always confirm the cable can handle the MCB rating you choose.

Common MCB Ratings by Circuit

  • 6A: lighting circuits
  • 16A: general socket and small appliance circuits — like the Schneider IC60N 16A
  • 20–32A: ring mains, water heaters, dedicated appliance circuits
  • 40–63A: larger dedicated loads and sub-main feeds

Step 2: Choose the Right Trip Curve

The trip curve defines how quickly the MCB reacts to a surge of current — critical for circuits with inrush (motors, transformers).

  • Type B (3–5× rated current): resistive loads — lighting, sockets, heaters
  • Type C (5–10×): mixed loads with moderate inrush — most commercial circuits, small motors
  • Type D (10–20×): high-inrush loads — large motors, transformers, welding equipment
